When Germany invaded the Netherlands in 1940 – thousands of Dutch sailors fled the country via requisitioned ships and many found themselves in Holyhead.
Many stayed there and found love and life on Anglesey.
To honour such an emotive event which had such an impact upon so many lives – a memorial is to be made from stone taken from Holyhead.
On a cold and windy day in February, Grosvenor set out to choose and retrieve the stone from a bluff at Breakwater Park. Several pieces were chosen to give the maximum opportunity to create the best final piece.
Now, the piece has been chosen, and the stone is set in our Mason’s Yard undergoing final shaping in readiness for the next stage of creating the memorial which will involve a motif, plaque and benches made from locally salvaged oak.
